The horse is by nature a social animal, and their ability to make friends outside their own species is the stuff of endless Internet GIFs and YouTube videos. Horses and dogs are longtime allies on the hunt field and in barns around the globe. Goats have been used as stand-in companions for high-strung racehorses for centuries. But donkeys and Guineafowl? Well, that’s a new one on us.

Shauna Morrison Holmes of Scio, Ohio is the proud owner both a couple of donkeys and a flock of Guineas, a species of partridge-like African birds known for their big personalities and protective instincts. (Fun fact: they’re also great at controlling deer ticks and other insect pests and discouraging snakes and rodents.)

Morrison says her donkeys won’t allow her flock of chickens to enter their pen. But the Guineafowl? Well, that’s something else entirely…
