It’s usually the start of the world’s oldest Dad-joke “A horse walks into a bar….”
But last weekend in Belgium, the punchline was on restaurant workers and guests at the Bistrôt Le Ciel, located in the five-star La Butte aux Bois hotel in Lanaken.
On Saturday, October 24, staff and guests of the restaurant were stunned when a handsome bay horse calmly entered through the front door and began strolling among the tables, walking beneath the restaurant greenery, and even under several decorative disco balls—at one point gently bumping a glass wall with its nose.
Located in the countryside of East Belgium near the Netherlands border and at the edge of Hoge Kempen National Park, the restaurant says the occasional stray bird flying in through their doors is par for the course at Bistrôt Le Ciel.
But well-bred warmbloods? Not so much.
The unexpected walk-in was later discovered to have come from the world-famous Zangersheide Stud Farm, located nearby.
According to Dutch language HLN, Flanders’ largest newspaper, restaurant guest Jana Vitiligo-De Vliegher thought her boyfriend had planned a special birthday surprise during lunch. “I happened to be on my phone at the time, so I was able to start filming very quickly. My first reaction was: ‘Poopie, am I getting a horse?’” joked Vitiligo-De Vliegher, a DJ from nearby Leopoldsburg.
“But it certainly counts as a [surprise]. I’m just glad it didn’t run amok, because then it would have been a whole different story.”
Indeed, no restaurant property, staff, or patrons were harmed during the entirety of the visit, which lasted about 10 minutes, according to onlookers. That’s when a restaurant guest produced a dog treat and, with very little fanfare, enticed the well-mannered horse to follow him out of the establishment, hooves gently clomping the whole way.
According to reports, Zangersheide quickly collected its escapee and recently confirmed to Horse Network the horse was returned to its stable, safe and unharmed.
Although no additional details were provided about the horse, itself—can we just say—since there’s plenty of footage, we’ve seen stranger and less effective sale horse videos before…
What’s this? An attractive and totally non-plussed warmblood calmly walking into a spooky new place and behaving like the perfect gentleman, at liberty, for a full 10 minutes?
The Real Housewives of New Jersey have a worse track record in restaurants than that.
Heck, we’ll even suggest the perfect show name: Allswell Endswell Z.
