Becky Moody is laughing at the back gate as she gesticulates boisterously at her stand-in groom and longtime friend, Kim Masson. One woman is sobbing, overwrought with emotion. The other guffawing heartedly on horseback. Her joy infectious.
In a sport that routinely moves both riders and fans to tears—crying in the press conference is standard fare in elite dressage—Moody sets the mood. And it’s a fun one.
As was The Beatles-themed freestyle she and Jagerbomb rode to a new personal best of 88.330% at the Zen Elite FEI Dressage World Cup Final in Fort Worth, Texas.
The test opened with John Lennon’s “Imagine” and showed what they had dreamed up—cantering straight into a double pirouette left, 12 one-tempis on the center line, then pirouetting right into two tempis on a circle. In their first four movements.
“Right from the get-go, [Jagerbomb] was just so focused and so with me,” Moody said. “The beauty of the Freestyle is that you are able to showcase your horse’s strengths, and he finds the changes on the curved lines very easy, and because he is good in the balance, he can go from one [movement] to another without a struggle.”
The message was clear: Moody came to play—and both Jägerbomb and the enthusiastic crowd in Dickies Arena were her willing partners. Just as she intended them to be.
“For me, it is really important that I enjoy riding to the music,” explained Moody of her Freestyle medley that included “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “All You Need is Love,” “With a Little Help From My Friends,” “Here Comes the Sun,” “Love Me Do,” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”
“But also when I am choosing my music, I very much have the thought process that I am choosing the music for the audience.”
And did she ever. By their final center line to “Twist and Shout” and “Come Together,” Moody and her 12-year-old KWPN gelding had the crowd on their feet, clapping and hollering, as they extended trot into their final square halt.
And the appreciation was mutual.
“The crowd in there were insane,” laughed Moody. “I am officially going to rent them for all shows going forward. They now have to come everywhere, because that was just the most incredible arena to ride in. So it was super cool.”
Jagerbomb will spend next week in the field followed by a month hacking out, she said. As for how Moody planned to celebrate her career first World Cup title:
“Well, first of all, I’m going to go for a drug test. Woohoo!” she laughed.
Then, what else…
“I think maybe a few Jägerbombs.”
