Fresh off his 3rd place podium finish at the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final in Basel this month with Visconti du Telman, Rio Olympic team gold medalist Kevin Staut hasn’t let up.
On Sunday April 13, the French rider and World no. 15 topped a 30-horse field to win the CSI5* 1.60m UAE President’s Cup in Abu Dhabi aboard the 12-year-old Belgian stallion, New Libero One d’Asschaut.
The best part? It was the stallion’s career-first 1.60m Grand Prix class and his first victory since moving up to the 5* level this winter.
Staut and New Libero One d’Asschaut were just one of five pairs through on Course Designer Alan Wade’s (IRL) first-round track. There, he faced Irish Olympian Cian O’Connor aboard the 12-year-old Zangersheide gelding Iron Man. Staut stopped the clock at 34.79 seconds, besting O’Connor’s 36.07 seconds. Staut’s countryman, Roger Yves Bost (FRA), finished third with Embassy du Chateau on 36.91 seconds.
Paired together for only two months, Staut took over the ride on New Libero One d’Asschaut from France’s Thibault Touron in February and quickly moved the stallion up the ranks. Within their first few weeks together, the pair had won a CSI-W 5* 1.45m class and finished second, days later, in the 5* 1.55m Gothenburg Trophy in Sweden.
