A great 1.60m horse—we’re talking the likes of King Edward, Explosion W, and Caracole de la Roque—wins two to three five-star Grands Prix a year.

In 2024, Leone Jei, United Touch S and Foxy de la Roque won three apiece. The year prior, it was King Edward, Cepano Baloubet, and Donatello D’Auge.

On occasion, a horse and rider pair will be on an epic roll and win four GPs in a single year at the five-star level. Equita Van’t Zorgvliet did it in 2016 with Daniel Deusser. Clooney 51 (Martin Fuchs) and Explosion W (Ben Maher) hit the same target in 2019, as did Victorio Des Frotards (Steve Guerdat) in 2020.

But only one rider in the past decade has won more than four on the same horse. On Sunday, he matched his own record.

Kent Farrington and Greya, the fleet-footed mare ensuing that he keeps that world number one armband, have won six five-star Grands Prix—this year. That’s as many as King Edward, widely considered one the greatest horses of this decade, has won over the course of his career.

On Sunday, Farrington bested a six-horse jump off to top the American Gold Cup and it wasn’t even close. First to return for the short course, the pair sped through the timers in a blur of black and grey to stop the clock at 34.75 seconds. They were nearly two seconds faster than third place finisher Daniel Coyle on the ever speedy Farrel (36.49) and over a second ahead of two-time American Gold Cup winners Shane Sweetnam and James Kann Cruz (35.97).

“This is an incredible horse and an amazing athlete; she can do everything she needs to be able to in the sport. I’m looking forward to the future and trying to enjoy the moment at the same time,” said Farrington.

Incredible is putting it mildly. The win, just a week after the pair reclaimed the World Cup at Traverse City, cements Greya’s sixth five-star GP title of 2025. It’s a feat one one other horse has managed in the past decade.

That horse? Gazelle, also piloted by Farrington. The pair recorded their career best season in 2017.

Gazelle went on to be the winningest five-star Grand Prix horse of the decade with 13 career wins (Jumpr stats).

Greya, at just 11, has seven. The Oldenburg mare (Colestus x Contender) is now in contention to beat her predecessor’s record for wins in a calendar year and they’ve got three months to do it…
