It’s a phrase that’s often used to describe an exceptional jump off round. With United Touch S and Richie Vogel, it takes on a new definition entirely. They’re a class of their own.

Twenty-one of the world’s top 25 made up the 40-horse start list in the Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen, one of four Majors in the Rolex Grand Slam. It’s two grueling rounds, set at maximum height, on one iconic field before a legion of fans—and they’re frothing for sport. Aachen is a modern amphitheatre. More gladiator, than equestrian in setting and trial.
Three pairs found the key to Frank Rothenberger’s test of scope and stamina, forcing a jump off. Rising star Sophie Hinners. Grand Slam live contender Richie Vogel. And Argentina’s José María Larocca Jr.
But two might as well have been playing for second.
Because pressure is the canvas of Vogel’s greatest work and United Touch S, his greatest instrument. Together, they’re art. That expertly executed jump off round? A masterpiece in precision.
And in the moment after, one final genius stroke.
When 29-year-old Vogel galloped through the timers six seconds up on the clock, he didn’t throw his helmet in the air and fist pump in exuberance. He calmly patted his horse’s neck, thanking him for his efforts, and then pointed to the remarkable stallion, deferring to the star of the show.
Their performance brought the crowd to their feet in standing ovation. Even with one pair still to come, the result was all but decided. Larocca Jr. delivered a fast clear, but could not match the pace set by Vogel and the 14-year-old super stallion. Because who could?
Other great horses and great partnerships will come and go in this sport and deliver more great moments that will no doubt capture our hearts and imagination. But there will never be another Richie Vogel and United Touch S. Watching this pair is witnessing history being written in real time.
