The Pan American Games are here!

Taking place October 20 to November 5, 2023, the annual regional championship is being held, for the first time ever, in Santiago, Chile.

As the largest, multi-sport event in the Americas, the ‘Pan Ams’ will host more than 8,000 athletes competing across 39 sports, including dressage, eventing, and show jumping. In the lead-up to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, there’s plenty at stake for this year’s 41 international teams, including just a handful of down-to-the-wire qualification spots for some of the Western Hemisphere’s usual equestrian contenders.

Here’s a look at when and where to watch, who’s coming, and which nation is likely to make a splash in Santiago this year.

With a U.S. dressage berth already secured for 2024 and just two spots to Paris (of three total remaining) on offer in Chile, look for Canada, winners of the gold at the 2019 Pan Ams in Lima, and Brazil, who took bronze, to be gunning for top honors.

The U.S. eventing squad punched their ticket to Paris back in 2022 at the FEI Eventing World Championship. With only two spots remaining for Olympic Team qualification at the Pan Ams, best believe that still-unqualified 2019 Lima silver medalist, Brazil (coached by Great Britain’s William Fox-Pitt), will make a move. Canada, who finished 11th at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and is currently under new direction from Olympic eventer Rebecca Howard, is also looking to qualify.

Who to Watch:

Brazil just eked-past the U.S. at the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup Final, taking the coveted Olympic berth at that event. With Brazil out of the way, that leaves the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Argentina—which took an impressive seventh place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics—all gunning for just three remaining spots in Santiago and a ticket to the City of Lights next year. Can you say nail-biter?!
