They say life’s too short to not eat dessert. Well, I say life is too short to not feed your horse the whole bag of treats.

Okay, maybe not the whole bag, but with muffins this special you’ll never feel guilty about overindulging your horse ever again.

DayBreak Farm Muffin Company makes delicious horse treats, but more importantly has forged a path to meaningful work for special needs individuals in Buck County, PA.

Muffins With A Mission was founded in 2015 when Kim Maychuk, owner of KT Saddlery and mother of a special needs child, confronted the looming question all parents of special needs kids eventually ask: what happens when they grow up?

“We have five children. Our youngest daughter, Tess, has Down Syndrome, and like any special needs mom you start to think about when they get older, when they’re done with school, what’s next? A lot of times there isn’t work for them,” she said.

Maychuk explained that when special needs individuals age out of school and vocational programs they often lead more isolated lives. Employment opportunities are far and few between. Many take up volunteer work.

“We decided it might be a fun thing if we started making horse treats, and see if we could help out the special needs community, including my daughter, and have this little business,” said Maychuk.

KT Saddlery, a full service tack shop with a large dealer of feed and bedding, has been a community hub in Bucks County since 2000. So, Maychuk was already deeply involved her community when she decided to start the bakery. The little business soon blossomed and is now an active vocational job training site and place of employment for special needs individuals who have graduated school.

Sharing the love of horses is the icing on the cake (or the sweet treat center of the muffin).

“Our mission is to provide meaningful work in a happy encouraging environment where they can socialize and make friends. This business may not change the world, but it’s changing lives in my little corner of it, and that’s good enough for me,” Maychuk said.
