Thirty-three-year-old eventer Katharine Morel of Fort Saskatchewan, AB, and her horse, Kerry On, died following a rotational fall at Rocking Horse Winter III Horse Trials in Altoona, FL, on Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020.
Morel and the eight-year-old Thoroughbred mare fell at fence eight of the Intermediate level cross-country course.
Reported Equestrian Canada:
Morel was immediately transported by Lake County Emergency Medical Services to Waterman Hospital in Tavares, FL, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Kerry On suffered fatal injuries and passed shortly after the fall.
“Today, the equestrian industry lost not just an exceptional athlete, but an exceptional person, as well as the horse she loved,” said EC High Performance Director, James Hood. “On behalf of EC, I extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Katharine, as well as to the entire team who surrounded Kerry On.”
Discovered by Morel as an off-the-track three-year-old, Kerry On made her FEI debut with the Canadian rider in 2019, contesting three CCI2* events that season. Last month, the pair finished fourth in the Open Intermediate division at Rocking Horse Winter II Horse Trials.
Rocking Horse Stables hosts five United States Eventing Association (USEA) recognized horse trials during the fall and winter months with divisions ranging from Beginner Novice to Advanced Level.
