Mastering the elusive tail braid is like riding a bike. At first, it’s hard to find the balance you need to secure a steady start and coordinate the opposing actions of picking and dropping hair. More often than not, your first few passes will follow a less-than-straight line. And, when it’s done, you may suffer from sore, cramped muscles.

But once you get the hang of it, tail braiding is a skill rarely lost. It just might take you a few (dozen) hours to get to that point.
