Unless you hail from Southwest Germany, chances are high you have never seen a Black Forest Horse in the flesh. And that’s a shame because they are flat out GORGEOUS.

Known in their native land as Schwarzwälder Füchse (or Kaltblut), this ancient cold blood is technically endangered—there are approximately 700 registered broodmares and 50 stallions in Germany—with a total population estimated to be under 2,000. Compared to a few decades ago when there were fewer than 150 registered broodmares worldwide, the efforts to preserve this wonderful breed are clearly paying off.

Durable and good natured, the Black Forest Drafts have evolved from agrarian roots into consummate therapy and schooling horses, with supermodel locks.
