Fun fact: the Ruby-Throated hummingbird beats its wings once every 0.02 seconds—which is roughly the same, infinitesimal decimal (0.03 seconds) by which Daniel Bluman and Corbie V.V. lost the 5* Grand Prix of Greenwich to Kent Farrington and Toulayna back in 2025.
That’s right. The beat of a hummingbird’s wings.
It goes without saying, defeat by that small a margin has got to sting. So it’s little wonder that this Saturday, September 26, Bluman and Corbie V.V. came back swinging during the 2026 5* Grand Prix of Greenwich.
Second-last to take to the arena for the jump-off round, the pair produced the only double-clear effort of the day, stopping the clock at 44.26 seconds to take the win. In touch of poetic justice, it was Bluman’s turn to edge-out Farrington, who finished second with one pole down in the jump-off with Descartes SR on a time of 41.31 seconds.
McLain Ward (USA), who also pulled a rail, was third with Lestro VD Valckenborg (43.31 seconds).
“For sure, going after these guys and not before, in a jump off like this, is a huge advantage,” said Bluman referring to Farrington and Ward, who preceded him in the order. “My best bet was to jump a clear round.”
Challenging weather conditions along with a substantial, 1.90m-wide triple bar at Jump 7 added an extra layer of difficulty to Round 1, with only six combinations cracking the code to Course Designer Guilherme Jorge (BRA)’s 16-effort track.
For his part, Farrington may have been the runner-up this year in Greenwich, but he’s earned his own impressive hat-trick in the process: taking a third, straight, second-place finish in a MLSJ Grand Prix this season, after matching results in Toronto and Traverse City.
“That’s frustrating in one sense, but in another, it’s great performances with great horses, and I’m proud of that,” said Farrington, who currently ranks at No. 2 in the world. “Those seconds turn into firsts.”
This is just the second, career 5* 1.60m Grand Prix victory for Bluman and the 11-year-old Zangersheide mare, Corbie V.V., who also won the Kubota Grand Prix at MLSJ Toronto in August of 2025. Together, the partners of three years jump clear at a 59% clip in 27 rounds at 1.60m+, finishing on the podium 44% of the time (Jumpr).
This season, Farrington and Bluman are also battling it out for the MLSJ Individual title, where the American rider currently tops the standings with 76 points; Bluman sits in second place on 55 points for Israel. Six legs currently remain on the calendar for MLSJ 2026/2027, with the series moving on to the Hudson Valley next month (October 7-11).
