The U.S. Postal Service’s Latest Forever Stamp Is All About the Ponies

Generations ago, “Misty” brought showers of literary acclaim to the wild ponies of the Chincoteague and Assateague barrier islands off the coast of Maryland and Virgina. In more recent decades, however, their majestic herds have been reduced to entertaining sunburned tourists, and even teaching the occasional overzealous lifeguard a thing or two.

Thankfully, the ponies of Assateague are about to receive some long-overdue praise this spring when the U.S. Postal Service officially makes them the third of 16 new Forever Stamps created in honor of the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary.

The stamp, featuring an image by Tim Fitzharries of Fayetteville, Arkansas, will be issued on June 2nd. Here’s a preview:
