Five people were injured when a racehorse crashed through a safety barrier and into a group of spectators in France on Tuesday.

The incident happened on the final straight of the seventh race at Nantes Racecourse.

Fin March, ridden by jockey Kénégan Deniel, was closing in on the leader when he suddenly swerved to the right and appeared to try to jump the barrier. Horse and jockey flipped over the guard rail and into a group of onlookers.

Deniel was thrown clear of the horse onto the asphalt. He reportedly remains at Nantes University Hospital with an injury to his right knee.

Four of the five spectators hit—three girls, a grandmother, and her daughter—escaped serious harm. The grandmother suffered a mild head injury and was taken to the hospital for additional tests.

Unfortunately, Fin March did not survive the accident. French racing website Equidia reports that the horse suffered a brain hemorrhage and was euthanized at the stable.
