The Olympic journey for Mexico’s Andres Azcarraga and France’s Kevin Staut has come to a premature end in Paris.

Azcarraga’s 17-year-old Hanoverian stallion Contendros 2 and Staut’s 15-year-old Selle Français Viking d’la Rousserie failed to pass the first horse inspection.

Four of the 95 horses presented were sent to the holding box on Wednesday. Two passed on re-inspection that morning. Contendros 2 and Viking d’la Rousserie were re-presented Wednesday afternoon but did not pass inspection.

Reserve riders for both countries will now move forward.

For France, Olivier Perreau and Dorai d’Aiguilly step in for Staut. Four-time Olympian Federico Fernandez and Romeo will replace Azcarraga on Team Mexico.

The Paris Olympics would have been the championship debut for Azcarraga (31) and his partner of 8+ years. With three Grand Prix wins and 11 podium finishes to their record, they were the Mexican Olympic team’s most accomplished pair. (Jumpr Stats).

Staut, a two-time Olympian, was a member of the gold medal winning team at the 2016 Rio Games and is currently ranked no. 17 in the world. Paris will make the Olympic debut for his replacement, Perreau.

Jumping at the Paris Games starts Thursday August 1.
