Throughout her long and impressive career, Wellington-based rider/trainer Candice King has made a name for herself on the international show jumping circuit. She’s represented the U.S. on numerous Super League and Nations Cup teams, mostly recently with back-to-back wins in 2015 on the now-retired mare, Kismet 50. But King takes equal pride in the successes she’s been able to achieve with the young and/or “difficult” horses that she’s encountered along the way.

At a benefit clinic last month in Upstate New York, King spent three days training students of all levels. She also rode a number of the horses in attendance, great and small, whom she schooled while sharing her favorite words of wisdom with the audience. And, like any good clinic attendee, we took notes!

Here are a dozen of our favorite #King-isms for riding, training, and life.
