When artist Garðar Ólafsson decided to combine Icelandic horses and waterfalls in stunning black and white video, the similarities between the two may not have been immediately apparent. But in art, the importance of a connection is as much visceral as it is cerebral—if not more so—and if “Waterfalls and Horses” is any indication, we could sit and watch both do their things (flowing, grazing) all day long.

Ólafsson says that for him, the two have a similar energy. “You can feel the strength and the power of both when you are standing in front of a waterfall and an Icelandic horse, it’s just amazing,” he says. Working in photography as well as film, Ólafsson captures the essence of this hardy breed and the dynamic landscape they belong to.

“Icelandic horses are so unique…they are all so beautiful in their own different ways,” says the artist.

Ólafsson shot the video below in South Iceland, between the towns of Garður and Keflavík, and filmed the waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. It took a couple of weeks to complete the shooting, in part because of the country’s notoriously fickle weather. The results speak for themselves, and we’re pretty sure you’ll find this video as hauntingly beautiful as we do. Awesome.
