Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist will make his next start in the $1,000,000 (GI) Haskell Invitational on July 31 at Monmouth Park, trainer Doug O’Neill confirmed on Monday. The decorated colt has not raced since suffering his first career defeat in the Preakness Stakes on May 21, subsequently spiking a fever the following day which kept him out of the Belmont Stakes.

Nyquist worked five furlongs in a :59 bullet Monday morning at Santa Anita, which was more than enough to convince his connections to make the trip to the Jersey Shore for the Haskell. A win in the Haskell would give the colt an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita in November.

Nyquist will be the ninth Kentucky Derby winner to run in the Haskell. Last year’s edition was won by Triple Crown champion American Pharoah.
