After an exciting team finish with Great Britain securing gold and France with silver, two of the world’s best riders put it all on the line in the show jumping arena at Versailles.

Three-day eventing at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games concluded Monday after a grueling back-and-forth fight for the No. 1 spot between Great Britain’s Laura Collett with London 52 and Germany’s Michael Jung with Chipmunk FRH. Jung came out on top.

Collett was the first of the top three contenders to enter the arena for the individual competition, and put the pressure on with an electric clear round. Australia’s Christopher Burton put it in a fault-free round with Shadow Man next to secure a silver individual medal.

But no one could stop Jung.

Riders described the crowds at Versailles to be some of the loudest they’ve ever ridden in front of. But when Jung entered the ring, all you could hear was Chipmunk FRH’s footfall.

With no margin for error, Jung did what Jung does and delivered a foot-perfect performance to take the gold.

Collett finished with a bronze medal. But both Collett and Jung were there to break records: No one ever has clinched three individual gold medals in eventing at the Olympic Games until now. It’s yet another accolade to add to Jung’s long list.

Collett and London 52 was the story of day one in Paris when they broke the Olympic record with a 17.5 in dressage. Jung was just behind her, however, with a 17.8. He and Chipmunk FRH would go double-clear to take the lead after cross-country. They are the first cross-country leader to maintain and finish in the lead since the two-round Olympic show jumping format was introduced to eventing in 2004, according to EquiRatings.

“Riding in that stadium was an experience that I don’t think I’ll ever, ever have again,” Collett said about her time in Paris. “The noise was unreal.”

British teammate Ros Canter put in a fault-free beautiful performance on Lordships Graffalo in the individual round. She was all smiles knowing she was taking home a team gold medal and placed 23rd individually. Tom McEwen went double-clear in stadium jumping both times Monday to put himself just off the podium in fourth.

American riders Liz Halliday with Nutcracker and Boyd Martin with Fedarman B both made the top 25 cut to jump in the individual final. Halliday had an unlucky rail at the first jump and some time to finish 15th. Martin jumped spectacularly clear in both show jumping rounds Monday to finish 11th.
