“I can’t believe it.
“If you had told me this would happen a year ago, I would have said that you’re crazy. It’s a shock to me. I am thrilled and I love this horse,” said USA’s Kevin Kohmann after winning the Piaffe Lounge FEI World Cup™ Grand Prix Freestyle in Wellington.
The win assures Kohmann of a spot on the start list for the World Cup™ Final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in April.
Three spots are available via the North American League. Anna Marek and Ben Ebeling secured the other two.
Riyadh will be the first championship appearance for 35-year-old and comes on the heels of a stellar season for Kohmann. In eight appearances aboard Dünensee at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival, he’s only once finished off the podium.
Friday’s Avicii-themed Freestyle marks his third consecutive victory and earned a 75.07% from the judges.
“Tonight’s test started off really well with my halt, but then the next movement screwed me and I said to myself ‘Kevin, just ride safe!’ I got a little ahead of the music, but my horse was 100% with me,” said Kohmann. “He really helped me out, so thank you Düne.”
USA’s Susan Dutta and Don Design DC took second with a score of 72.8%. Ellen McCarthy (GBR) slotted into third with Brave Heart on 71.855%.
