It’s been a pretty laid back week for Kentucky Derby champion Nyquist as he settles into the backside at Pimlico Race Course in anticipation of next Saturday’s Preakness Stakes. Since arriving in Baltimore on Monday, the undefeated colt has spent the week merely stretching his legs and getting a feel for the local dirt.
Nyquist enjoyed an early morning jog on Friday and was accompanied by some “eyes in the sky”, courtesy of the Maryland Jockey Club. There are many ways to watch a horse gallop, but this might be our favorite.
“He looks fantastic,” O’Neill said yesterday upon arrival to the barn. “The guys are all happy. He’s a horse that gives off such positive vibes. He still continues to talk to us in his own way, and he’s doing really well.”
O’Neill said his champion colt will not record an official breeze before the race, believing the 1-1/4 mile Kentucky Derby will leave his colt plenty fit for next weekend’s 1-3/16 mile race.
“It looks like the field is going to be tough,” O’Neill added. “It’s going to be a full field and there are a lot of new shooters, so that’s always a concern. But our main focus is on Nyquist’s health,” he said. “He looks great and has good energy coming off a big win in the Derby. It’s amazing how good he looks.”
