This Helicopter Horse Rescue Will Give You All the Feels

A pair of pack horses are injured when they lose their footing during a river crossing in a remote Alaskan backcountry. Eight hours from the nearest road, it’s a mad dash against time and nature to get these horses to a clinic.

Sounds like a job for Animal Planet’s “Dr. Dee: Alaska Vet”.

One of the horses, “Lucky”, is in particularly bad condition. He’s been beaten and battered by the river’s rocks, and his legs are extremely swollen and sore.

“[His legs] have been just pulverized, like someone would have taken a sledgehammer to them,” Dr. Dee explains. (Watch Dr. Dee provide emergency treatment at the scene.)

Unable to walk out on his own and no roads in sight, the only option for getting Lucky out is by air.

And it’s crazy.

Now that’s impressive.

The momentous occasion is sadly temporary, as just a few days after his rescue, Lucky’s condition worsened to the point he had to be put down. A sad ending to this incredible rescue, but it certainly does not diminish the incredible effort to save him.
