It’s a question as old as time. Or, at least, as old as electricity.

When you bust out your annual (and ideally horse-themed) ugly Christmas sweater this holiday season is it better to turn a spotlight on the garish goodness and light it up? Or to werk it classic style and let the ugly speak for itself?

The Zuccolotto sisters weigh in on the style debate you’ll inevitably face whilst shopping for your ugly Christmas sweater this year: no light or not to light? That is the question.

Light ’em up! — Ariana Zuccolotto

The more the merrier as far as I’m concerned! If you are given the option of adding lights to your ugly Christmas sweater, it’s your job—nay, your holiday duty—to take it. The only goal with an ugly Christmas sweater is to make it as obnoxious and over-the-top as possible. Heck, I would even add a music box if the option was available. (Someone get on that already!)

Make your ugly Christmas sweater the center of attention by pairing it with leggings and combat boots. And Be the Ugly this season.

My top pick for holiday fugliness this year: the LED “Fragile” Sweater from UglyChristmassweaters.com. It’s everything you want in an ugly Christmas sweater with the LED lights to prove it.

Thanks, but no — Chiara Zuccolotto

I am all for getting into the holiday spirit. But let’s rein it in a little, shall we? Style is about creating a cohesive outfit. “Statement” pieces, like ugly Christmas sweaters, are best incorporated into an outfit—they shouldn’t steal your spotlight with a light show.

I like to mix-in my ugly Christmas sweater by layering it over a dress, paired with tights and boots, or even pairing my sweater with an open vest and a pair of dark wash jeans and boots. It’s the style statement that says, “I was able to create a really cute outfit around a really ugly sweater.”

My top pick in hideous holiday woven’s is the Grinch Sweater from UglyChristmassweaters.com. It’s the ugly Christmas sweater that shines a light on your inner stylist.
