James H. Fairclough II takes us back to the year 1958 with this postcard to his grandfather, Dr. Robert Rost, from famed American show jumper Frank Chapot.

Rost and Chapot were business partners and BFFs of yesteryear. (They spent all holidays together and were part owners of Chardo Farm and many horses, which explains why there are no references to the weather or fine wine in Germany within this correspondence.)

In case you can’t read the small print, we’ve transcribed it for you:

Folks,

Things are fine here at Aachen. We won four classes and were secound [sic] in the Prize of Nations after jumping off with Spain + Germany. Spain won. We won about $2500 without get to [sic] high a placing in the big money class. Not bad when they pay your expences [sic] too.

Say hello to everybody at home and have a good show at Branchville.

Frank

Special thanks to James Fairclough for sharing his postcard and a brief glimpse into the personal life of the late legend.
