The 2016 colt foaled by beloved mare Zenyatta has passed away, Lane’s End Farm announced via the Team Zenyatta website. The colt, by War Front, was born on April 10th. It was a healthy delivery for Zenyatta but the colt was born with meconium staining and was taken to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, KY for close evaluation. Sadly, the colt was unable to overcome complications of meconium aspiration syndrome, a  condition that occurs when a foal inadvertently breathes amniotic fluid containing meconium (fetal fecal matter) into its lungs, either in utero or with its first breath after birth. The condition causes respiratory distress and pneumonia.

This was Zenyatta’s fourth foal. Two are currently in training (2012: Cozmic One, by Bernardini; 2013: Ziconic, by Tapit). Her 2014 filly, also by War Front, was fatally injured in a freak paddock accident.

Hearts go out to all involved.
